Story of the Snowpants

The lined weather pants I wear to work keep my legs warm against the cold weather of the night shift. But sometimes the site has more mud than a normal person can even imagine. At those times the pants get caked in muck from the knee down. The legs get wet from the ankle down as they drag in the puddles.

The weight from wet and mud can actually pull the waist lower than suits the situation. Then I tie the string a little tighter after hiking them up a little higher.

But what ever dirt, moisture or dust gathers on the snowpants one thing remains unchanged – they remain snowpants. Read more…

Standard of Living – Part 1

Since you were brought back to life with Christ,
1. focus on the things that are above;
2. keep your mind on things above, not on worldly things;
3. put to death whatever is worldly in you: your sexual sin, perversion,  passion, lust, and greed (which is the same thing as worshiping wealth)
4. get rid of your anger, hot tempers, hatred, cursing, obscene language, and all similar sins;
5. don’t lie to each other;
6. be sympathetic, kind, humble, gentle, and patient;
7. put up with each other, and forgive each other if anyone has a complaint. Forgive as the Lord forgave you;
8. above all, be loving;
9. let Christ’s peace control you;
10. be thankful;
11. let Christ’s word with all its wisdom and richness live in you;
12. use psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to teach and instruct  yourselves about {God’s} kindness. Sing to God in your hearts;
13. everything you say or do should be done in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Pure as New Fallen Snow

Today autumn turned to winter. The scientists said so. This year, the weather agreed.

A winter storm blows across a large area of southern Canada and into the USA. For me, it felt good to have snow on the ground, even if we didn’t get hit hard by this storm system.

Fresh snow, when it covers the ground, creates an almost magical effect. It sparkles. Before human contact the clean surface builds a treasure for the eye. Read more…

Correct Correction

We sometimes think that God’s forgiveness lets us off the hook. What a self-centred deception! Because you sinned other people got hurt. Read more…

Sin Free Joy

Do you believe that your sins are forgiven, and that Christ has made a full atonement for them?

Forgiveness stands as an extraordinary symptom of the presence of Jesus. Today, however, I began to think that human forgiveness differs from what God does.

Take Time to Smell…

So I got to work last night and the fragrance of newly placed animal waste wafted over the area. Now since some of my genes (or is that spelled jeans?) include an agricultural interest that smell did not constitute a deadly nuisance.

A lot of things in this world stink.  Read more…

I Don’t Understand People

I don’t understand people sometimes. The things they do make no sense.

Hard Lessons from a Strange Place

People tend to avoid the book of Leviticus. If you read it only as strange or different from your worship practice you surely miss much. Much in the first chapters of Leviticus is devoted to sacrifices dealing with sin.

God set out that sin requires some “sacrifice”, some act to complete forgiveness. Today religion has reduced confession to a set prayer spoken every Sunday, and forgiveness as words by the priest after the prescribed prayer finishes.
