Trash the Trash
In the “Toronto Sun” on Tuesday November 20, 2012 an article appears about littering. It’s one of those issues that belong to the earth world, but since I’m here it makes a difference.
We constantly pick up garbage from our yard where the wind (which blows wherever it wants to) deposits it. Some of it is throw-away trash. Some blows out of garbage pails where the garbage wasn’t properly kept.
I remember when I first came upon the computer programming term GIGO, “garbage in – garbage out”. If you enter errors or useless data into a computer you get the same junk out.
Does litter indicate a condition of the soul?
What do you do with your life? Do you read trashy literature filled with vulgarities and tales of immorality? Do you watch TV that was produced in the gutter, pandering to the lowest level of human entertainment? Where does your mind wander to revenge, hate, anger, lust, self-pity as you daydream?
No one makes you litter. No one makes you fill your mind and heart with degrading material. So why do you do it?
Anyway, the Psalmist was faced with this as well, even though it was thousands of years ago. So what solution did that poet chose?
“By what means can a young person make their [life] path pure, to keep it according to Your word? With my whole intellect I searched for You; don’t let my mind wander from Your commandments. I have memorized your saying in order that I might not sin against You” (Psalm 119:9-11, my translation).
So, yes, I wish people wouldn’t throw the wrappings from their fast food meal on the street. Yes, I wish people would be more careful with their garbage.
But even more I pray people will go back to memorizing Scripture, reading Christian authors, watching morality plays and meditating on Jesus.
So, will you be rash with your trash or be a garbage eliminator with the Creator?
