M. E. Abbey wrote words (1917) that became a very popular gospel song, “Life is like a mountain railroad”. I thought about that today as I was half asleep and the train passed by our house, and I laughed.
Our backyard butts directly onto a rail line. The train goes past every weekday, east, and then back west a little later. We are not on a main line, obviously. Today was a much larger train than usual, fifteen cars.
A train only goes on the track. It can’t go unless there is a track.
What if people who claim loyalty to Jesus lived life like they journeyed on a train? Don’t veer off the track that Creator has built for you. Don’t deceive self into thinking the way to heaven is travelled at your own whim, at a speed and direction you set.
It gives a new image to words Jesus spoke, “Enter through the narrow gate because the gate and [rail]road that lead to destruction are wide. Many enter through the wide gate. But the narrow gate and the [rail]road that lead to life are full of trouble. Only a few people find the narrow gate” (Matthew 7:13-14 God’s Word, sorry for the editorial freedom in square brackets).
When the Spirit begins to move one better get on the train. Then you’ll be on the right track. Train yourself to get it right.
Why do I think this is a possible way to look at this? Well, as we read in the Authorized Version of 1611, “In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple” (Isaiah 6:1, italics added).
