All right, already. What’s with so many people mowing their lawns just after we’ve had 66mm (almost three inches) of rain? The grass is way too wet. And more importantly, I work night shift. Please be quiet!
All right, so the neighbours can’t hear my complaint. And why should they set their yard work schedule to my sleep patterns? Well, I can’t help it if my work happens at night. I’m not the only one. Be a little more caring of others, I’d say.

I spend all night making the world a safer place, one shift at a time. Surely people could think of that.

But why should they?

And why should God answer every little prayer about weather, or curing a cold or indigestion, or changing the speed at which grass grows, or…

I do know this, though, that God looks out for eternity. Curing you because you ate too much ice cream may not rate as important when people’s eternal souls are at risk.

Still, it all goes back as far as Eden. The tempter played right into the human weakness for power and prestige. The lie was that God didn’t want humans to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil because “God knows that when you eat it your eyes will be opened. You’ll be like God, knowing good and evil” (Genesis 3:5 God’s Word). Well, the half truth is they would know good and evil, but from the perspective of a rebellious child, alienated from Creator who loves. We want to be gods, but we “ain’t”, as they say.

When you pray, who’s the one in charge? Do you demand, or humbly ask what God wants from you?

So, tough on me. The world doesn’t need to rotate around me, my wishes or my wants or my convenience.

On the other hand, I’m in a better place when I rotate around Almighty God and submit to divine wishes, Paraclete’s wants and the purposeful convenience of Jesus Christ.

Oh, God, by the way, could I please get some sleep?
