Many of the original “Star Trek” episodes were comedies. In “A Piece of the Action” the Enterprise crew must help a society move from gang-based to socially responsible.

In the TV show the solution comes simply from forcing the different territories to co-operate.

Most humans endeavour to find the solution in doing the right thing. If the right action gets done something good will happen.

In this model faith has no place. Human energy and intellect overcome all obstacles. Science and technology become the healers and solvers of all problems.

Now, children know a different approach. Our granddaughter will leap from the stairs into arms that sometimes haven’t had notice of the need to react into catching the little ball of motion. So far no one has ever dropped her. She lives by a faith that when she jumps someone will catch her. They always have; they always will in her mind.

Despite the fact that her actions can send our hearts into overdrive, her model comes closer to what Jesus taught. “My God will richly fill your every need in a glorious way through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19 God’s Word). Not wants, but needs. And when our granddaughter comes flying through the air she needs a rescue.

So I see an alteration in phrasing needed here. For us, in our stand and walk with Jesus, we don’t need a piece of the action, but a deep peace that tells us we rest in the will of the Creator.

“Never worry about anything. But in every situation let God know what you need in prayers and requests while giving thanks. Then God’s peace, which goes beyond anything we can imagine, will guard your thoughts and emotions through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7 God’s Word).

So get a piece of the peace that surpasses human understanding.
