In the world today it seems like more and more Christians are turning to political leaders as heroes. A politician claims to have a certain belief that coincides with the theology of a certain person or group, and that public figure is given full support.

Somehow a speech on abortion or Israel or whatever trumps that speaker’s personal and moral lifestyle. So a lying adulterer who sides with one view that affirms the doctrine of a religious group finds that group solidly backing that person, because of one or two similarities of stated belief.

However, we are to pray for every leader, not just the ones we agree with and support. “First of all, I encourage you to make petitions, prayers, intercessions, and prayers of thanks for all people, for rulers, and for everyone who has authority over us” (1 Timothy 2:1 God’s Word Translation©).

More to the point, we are not to rely on any leader, party, system or nation. Our hope is in God alone. Remember what Isaiah recorded about God? “How horrible it will be for those who go to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who depend on many chariots, who depend on very strong war horses. They don’t look to the Holy One of Israel. They don’t seek the LORD. He is wise and can bring about disaster. He doesn’t take back his words. He rises against wicked people and against those who help troublemakers. The Egyptians are humans, not gods. Their horses are flesh and blood, not spirit. When the LORD uses his powerful hand, the one who gives help will stumble, and the one who receives help will fall. Both will die together” (Isaiah 31:1-3 God’s Word Translation©).

Stop writing a blank cheque of support to any leader, especially those whose lives are not in accord with the humility and fruit of The Spirit expected of believers. Don’t give any leader a “Get Out of Jail Free” card simply because they make you feel good on one or too moral points.

And stop trying to win people over to a particular party or candidate. Spread Good News about eternity, not any coming election.
