I have a peculiar job.
Every moment on duty I have to assume something bad will happen.Around every corner or in every room or closet my alert status reads high since some unauthorized person may lurk in the shadows. The assumption is that sin “is lying outside your door ready to attack. It wants to control you, but you must master it” (Genesis 4:7 God’s Word).
Every person that passes by may be casing the joint in order to commit a non-legal act later. The assumption is that “all people have sinned, they have fallen short of God’s glory” (Romans 3:23 God’s Word).
At any moment the client or supervisor could arrive on site for any of a number of reasons. The unforgivable sin in my business is sleeping on the job. “Therefore, be alert, because you don’t know when the owner of the house will return. It could be in the evening or at midnight or at dawn or in the morning. Make sure he doesn’t come suddenly and find you asleep. I’m telling everyone what I’m telling you: ‘Be alert!’ ” (Mark 13:35-37 God’s Word).
I must arrive on time, stay on site during the shift, and never leave before the shift has actually ended. So I have to act professionally even though the boss isn’t on site and not, as the Bible says, “obey them only while you’re being watched, as if you merely wanted to please people. Be sincere in your motives out of respect for your real master. Whatever you do, do it wholeheartedly as though you were working for your real master and not merely for humans” (Colossians 3:22-23 God’s Word).
And if I do the job right I keep my position and even get paid (even if it is close to, or at, minimum wage). “After all, the worker deserves his pay” (Luke 10:7 God’s Word).
So even though my work is totally secular I don’t have to work it like I was secular.
How do you work it?
